UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has developed the first of what it says will become an annual global study examining the role of perceptions on how and where products are made, sold, bought and consumed. The new study, "Navigating the Product Mindset," explores the connections and contradictions between perceptions of consumers and manufacturers on issues of safety, innovation, performance and sustainability. Global perceptions were collected from consumers and manufacturers in China, India, Germany, and the U.S. across industries in high tech, food, building materials, and household chemicals.

"UL has worked closely with manufacturers around the globe to help them bring safer products to market faster for more than 117 years," said Keith Williams, UL's chief executive. "Today we live in a more interconnected and interdependent world than ever before. With supply chain complexity growing and global trade increasing at unprecedented rates, understanding and navigating the Product Mindset is essential."

That’s an idea I’m developing for a gallery show during New York Design Week this year. It represents a white picket fence, one time a symbol of the American Dream, slowly being relinquished into blackness. Lots of experimenting to do before I know if it will work the way I envision.

Kengo Kuma - Starbucks

Tokyo based architects Kengo Kuma and Associates decided to switch up the vibe of coffee shops when Starbuckswanted to set up shop on the street that leads straight to the Dazaifu Tenmagu, a holy shrine dedicated to a Japanese deity. Kuma wanted to make sure the design of the store fit in with it’s surroundings, in order to respect the sanctity of the grounds.

Because of this Kuma was able to spice up the Starbucks shop without compromising the company’s successful brand identity. The approach was reminiscent of traditional carpentry, as the team connected small square wooden blocks together to create a 3D pattern which reaches up the walls and to the ceiling. The wood pieces start in the back of the shop and move forward throughout the space, until they shoot out of the glass facade, which is set back 10′ from the street to allow for outdoor seating. Angular banquette seating was situated against one wall, while small individual wood desks are attached to the opposite wall. The eye-popping shop is a refreshing change from

EARL is a flexible light which is convincing through its simple but dynamic system. Twenty wooden pearls, threaded on a cable act as levels in order to adjust the illuminating object. A hook locates the light source to any desired position. This provides an easy method of changing height and orientation, which enables a wide variety of implementation. The LED light source is embedded into the biggest pearl at the end of the thread. The silicone shade is pushed onto this pearl without being fixated. Similar to a spherical joint the silicone shade can be moved into different directions.

Η Parallaxi και η ομάδα του "Θεσσαλονίκη Αλλιώς", έχοντας ήδη ξεκινήσει το δεύτερο χρόνο των δράσεών τους στρέφουν σε συνεργασία με το Goethe Institut Θεσσαλονίκης το ενδιαφέρον τους στη δημιουργική οικονομία της πόλης. Κατά το διάστημα 2-8 Μαρτίου μία ολόκληρη εβδομάδα αναμένεται να αναδείξει τις δυνατότητες ανάπτυξης μίας δημιουργικής ταυτότητας της πόλης με το γενικό τίτλο "Made in Thessaloniki". Functionality and shape
A conscious choice for functionality in design, doesn’t necessarily mean one has to be burdened by conformity, let alone predictability. The Rising Table ignores the cliched notion that a table is little more than a flat surface that is held up by four separate legs. The result is a surprising mixture of fluid design that blends the multifaceted tabletop with the latticework of wooden beams that function as the center of the construct. From there, the table sprouts four wooden beams that hold up the entire construct.
Not only does this design approach rid itself of every single predictable feature when one imagines a table, it also emphasizes that the Rising Table is indeed made from a single piece of wood.
This proves the Rising Table isn’t merely an eye catcher when it comes to design, it can also hold its own as a functional piece of furniture, albeit with a twist.

Sidenote: the applied construction techniques to create both the Rising Chair and the Rising Table, emphasize on its relative applicable ease for production on a mass scale.

In spite of the fact that this chair immediately brings to mind the famous Hans Wegner chair (see below), one can not resist its beauty, elegance and skilled craftsmanship. A chair I would love to own!

Inoda and Sveje say: "DC10 is an evolution in our works on contemporary furniture with references to both of furniture craftsmanship in a historical sense and modern production with all the possibilities this gives. This chair is either shell nor skeleton it looks like a stick structure but has only two surfaces, one outside and one inside meeting in a very sharp edge. As it has almost become our trademark the sculpturing of surfaces does not stop anywhere so letting your hands wander by the curves in the wood there is continuous shapes to be explored everywhere. We trust this chair to be a milestone in our furniture design and are curious to see how it will be received."

Meticulously assembled from no less than 2208 individual plastic elements, ‘Tours’ is printed thanks to an innovative 3D manufacturing and selective laser sintering – ‘an additive manufacturing technique that uses a high power laser to fuse small particles of plastic, metal, ceramic or glass powders into a mass that has a desired 3-dimensional shape.’ Manufactured in Belgium, ‘Tours’ weights only 20 grammes and its production process takes four hours.

Eleava wanted to design an anniversary packaging for an olive oil, a tribute for the 29th Athens Classic Marathon, that took place in Athens, Greece, on the 13th of November 2011.
A line-drawing of an ancient Greek runner was made, in a way that it would form a pattern-like continuity. The drawing was then printed on the bottles and when more than one of the bottles were placed next to each other, the drawings gave the impression of the running crowd of the Marathon.The pattern was further used for other applications, such as t-shirts, calendars and notebooks, as well as the exhibition’s kiosk.

About the Work
This is a wind installation for the window display of ELTTOB TEP ISSEY MIYAKE. We use a very light and thin cloth 'organdie', and make the most of the characteristics. The fans are controlled, and the cloth is waving in the air as a creature.

About the Exhibition
We controlled 8 fans with programming that the cloth is making a beautiful wave at the front window display (16m x 3m). We used openFrameworks to control the wind movement from the fans. It gives a movement and shape to the cloth.

Each of these signed and numbered glass logs is made by impressing a real piece of wood into a specially-bound casting sand, then pouring 2300 degree F molten glass into the cavity left behind.
We worked with DeWitt Design here in the Bay Area to develop these pieces for the Sunset Idea House in 2006. The pieces proved so popular during the public tours that we decided to cast them in a limited edition to make them available as home decor items. They are not for use in direct contact with flames, but we find that they light up nicely with a few strategically placed votives. Click here to order directly from the studio.

Halo is a range of geometric CNC cut Solid Oak fruit bowls designed by Benjamin Hubert for Scandinavian brand David Design’s ‘Atelier collection’.

The bowls signature is a series of concentric ribs in the surface, these ribs allow for a minimum surface area contact with the fruit contents. This allows for optimum airflow beneath the fruit decreasing the presence of mould and increasing the shelf life of the produce.

The pre-positioned point touches the ground further forward, resulting in a stable quadruped gait. The bionic design and modular concept demonstrate how weight can be reduced and serve for exchangeable handles. New tips are regarding the oval tubing: you can obtain a harder or softer pressure point by simply turning it – in addition, three degrees of Shore hardness are offered. ODERSO is a shelf-system consisting of a single module. The geometry of this base-module in combination with the making of the edges renders the possibility of a multidimensionally modifiable and thus extremely variable assembly: by simple piling equal modules can be assembled to sideboards, shelves or room dividers.

According to the way of assembly the furniture's impression varies from orderly (in the sense of symmetrical / straight) to unorderly (in the sense of unsymmetrical / rampantly).
